Chicao Cutlery Block Set

Chicago Cutlery began in 1930 conditioning knives and catered particularly to professional butchers and packing plants.  As the demand for sharp knives grew, Chicago Cutlery was introduced by its founder, Alfred Paulson, and Chicago Cutlery evolved into a knife manufacturing business for the meat and poultry industry.  Their knives were designed to meet the tough demands of professional knife users.  Chicago Cutlery was not widely available to the retail market until it was introduced in 1969 by Ronald Gangelhoff.  Ronald Galgelhoff made the line’s professional cutlery available to consumers bringing professional, razor-sharp knives into the home for the first time.   This became a historical move for Chicago Cutlery,  thus  a consumer market for fine-edged knives was born.  Chicago Cutlery with its legendary status is hailed as the knife experts.  Today they have various collections of knives, knife sets, and cutlery block sets for every food preparation need.  They designed the Landmark Edition Collection specially for their 75th anniversary.  The Landmark Edition of knives and cutlery is constructed with an exclusive Taper Grind edge techhology for optimum sharpness.  With its elegant design, it would be a great addition or replacement of old knives in any kitchen.

The knife, fork and spoon is taken for granted in today’s society, but as a matter of fact, the tableware(knife, fork and spoon) as we know it today, developed in stages as far back as the cave man.  The cave man used crude stones or possibly shells as spoons.  His knives were most probably sharpened and ground thin pieces of flint or quartz.  He used these flint or quartz pieces for skinning animals as well as for cutting meat.

Spoon like tools were used long before knives or forks and probably goes back to the beginning of civilization.  Shells were used as  spoons and to make the tool more convenient, the shell was attached to a wooden or bone handle and somewhat resembled the modern spoon.

Some spoons were made totally from wood developed from hollowed out wood.  Also  ivory and slate were common materials used in making spoons.  In some parts of the ancient world, bronze and gold were also used to make spoons, some being elaborate and beautiful.  Silver apparently was first intoduced by the Greeks and Romans in making spoons.  The spoon was known in ancient times practically throught the civilized world.

The beginnings of forks were introduced around 1100 when the wife of an Italian nobleman, the Doge Domenice Silvie of Venice, introduced forks into tableware.  She considered herself too delicate to pick up a piece of meat with her hands.  Those early forks were two pronged tools and were not widely used even in Italy until the Renaissance.  In the 1500’s the forks became a common item of silverware used on the table in Italy.  People also then began using knives as a part of their tableware.  Prior to this, knives were carried on belts and used at mealtime as well as for other uses as necessary.  The knife and fork did not become popular in France and England until the mid 1600’s.  Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts brought the first fork to America in 1630.

Like kitchen knives and cutlery block sets that have developed into a variety of styles and materials, today tableware can be found with many different designs and choices of different metals or materials.  It can be found in the most plain of patterns to the most elaborate and ornate, from the most formal to the simplest of dining needs.

The first knife used by the cave man or the closest comparison to a knife was perhaps a long straight wooden stick with a sharpened point. No doubt later on it became a spear with a sharp piece of flint attached to the end of it.  With a sturdy straight pole it could be used with great accuracy in hunting or in war.  This weapon has been used throughout the ages and was very common even among the American Indians.

This tool was perhaps the first type of knife used by the Cave Man , and perhaps the only knife they had for cooking by using it for shish-k-bobs over an open flame.  Later they found ways to shape flint and stone into sharp knife like tools for their cutting needs. This was a far cry from the great innovations we have today with lovely and durable quality kitchen knives and kitchen cutlery made by great craftsmen.

Besides kitchen knives, the most common tool for other uses known to man has most probably been the knife.

The first knife known to man was developed by the cave man.  He made the knife from sharpened and ground pieces of flint and quartz and used it primarily for skinning animals and cutting meat.

Throughout history, the knife has served man not only as a tool but also as a weapon.  As a tool the knife is used by many industries with different knives for different tasks.  It is used by Artists in painting pictures. The knife is Sculptors most important tool especially when working in ebony and ivory.  The Doctor’s scalpel is probably his most important tool used at the operating table.

First on the list of weapons used in fighting or in war was the knife.  It was used extensively during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.  Knives were made in the form of daggers which were favorite small weapons.  During America’s pioneer days the Bowie Knife became very popular as both a tool and a weapon.  Even during WWII, when weapons became more complicated, the Commando Knife was very useful in hand to hand fighting.

Today we can find knives in just about every shape or form and built for limitless purposes.
