The knife, fork and spoon is taken for granted in today’s society, but as a matter of fact, the tableware(knife, fork and spoon) as we know it today, developed in stages as far back as the cave man. The cave man used crude stones or possibly shells as spoons. His knives were most probably sharpened and ground thin pieces of flint or quartz. He used these flint or quartz pieces for skinning animals as well as for cutting meat.
Spoon like tools were used long before knives or forks and probably goes back to the beginning of civilization. Shells were used as spoons and to make the tool more convenient, the shell was attached to a wooden or bone handle and somewhat resembled the modern spoon.
Some spoons were made totally from wood developed from hollowed out wood. Also ivory and slate were common materials used in making spoons. In some parts of the ancient world, bronze and gold were also used to make spoons, some being elaborate and beautiful. Silver apparently was first intoduced by the Greeks and Romans in making spoons. The spoon was known in ancient times practically throught the civilized world.
The beginnings of forks were introduced around 1100 when the wife of an Italian nobleman, the Doge Domenice Silvie of Venice, introduced forks into tableware. She considered herself too delicate to pick up a piece of meat with her hands. Those early forks were two pronged tools and were not widely used even in Italy until the Renaissance. In the 1500’s the forks became a common item of silverware used on the table in Italy. People also then began using knives as a part of their tableware. Prior to this, knives were carried on belts and used at mealtime as well as for other uses as necessary. The knife and fork did not become popular in France and England until the mid 1600’s. Governor John Winthrop of Massachusetts brought the first fork to America in 1630.
Like kitchen knives and cutlery block sets that have developed into a variety of styles and materials, today tableware can be found with many different designs and choices of different metals or materials. It can be found in the most plain of patterns to the most elaborate and ornate, from the most formal to the simplest of dining needs.
